Start with a clear photo of a package label, menu, letter, page, or screenshot. Read it uses AI to extract the text; Explain it helps you understand the wording. You can try the built-in sample before buying a membership.
Choose your photo
From the home screen, tap the camera icon to take a photo, or the photo icon to choose one from Photos. The camera may ask for permission the first time. Use a clear photo with the words facing the camera.
Choose Read it
In New reading, check the photo and select Read it. Then tap Read photo. Choosing a photo alone does not send it to the AI service.
Review the sharing permission
The first time, the app asks to share photos with OpenAI for processing. Read the explanation and choose Allow & send photo to continue, or Not now to return to your photo. An active membership and an internet connection are needed.
Read, listen, and come back later
The result opens in Reading Mode and is saved in your library. Tap Listen to hear it, or the Aa control to adjust its appearance. Use the original-photo button to compare the extracted text with your photo.
Start small
One well-lit page at a time works best. AI can misread words, handwriting, and equations, so check anything important against the original.
Reading small print while you are out
For a package or menu, photograph one section at a time with the words facing the camera. Move close enough to capture readable detail and reduce glare. Once the photo is processed, use Reading appearance to enlarge the text or tap Listen to hear it aloud.
